So, you have been labeled a leader or have made the decision to become a leader.  What will your most valuable tool be? Well, it’s you of course.  Once you make leadership your goal, you must immediately begin work on who shows up for that role.  Leaders require followers.  To take on the role of a leader, you must present an attractive enough you that others want to join.  That attractiveness can be charisma, ideas, a plan, or simply a friendly disposition.  There are many tools to effective leadership and they all come out of the same toolbox – you.

What does that mean to you? It means that you have to see yourself differently when you are a leader.  You have to see yourself as a leader and present as one – consistently.  You may have to do some training or studying on the side.  You may have to spend time thinking about leadership.  You may have to find other leaders to associate with and compare notes.  You may have to read books, listen to podcasts, watch Ted Talks, or the like to grow yourself.  You can not be the same person you used to be as a doer or a worker and simultaneously attempt to lead – they are two different tools.  It takes a decision and a deep-seated change to take on that new role.  Maybe it requires finding a mentor or hiring a coach.  You, as an individual, will always be your best investment.
